5 Essential Mac Utilities

Save time and transform your workflow!

Raycast - The Command Center Your Mac Deserves

After making the switch this year, Raycast has become an indispensable part of my Mac workflow. While I've barely scratched the surface of its capabilities, even basic features like custom shortcuts have saved me countless hours. One of my favorite implementations is custom commands for apple shortcuts. The customization potential is vast, and I'm excited to explore more of what Raycast can do.

Bartender: Declutter Your Menu Bar

If you're like me, a clean workspace helps maintain focus. Bartender excels at organizing your menu bar items, keeping only essential icons visible. My setup maintains quick access to WiFi, Bluetooth, monitor settings, and Control Center, while other items stay hidden until needed. Pro tip: Try the hover activation if you prefer mouse navigation over clicking.

Magnet: Window Management Done Right

Yes, Apple has introduced built-in window management, but Magnet still reigns supreme. My most-used shortcut? Ctrl + Opt + → for efficient window splitting. The customization options for thirds and half-screen arrangements make it a must-have, even in 2025. Apple's implementation, while improved, still doesn't match Magnet's flexibility.

CleanMyMac: New Look, Same Power

The latest version sports a redesigned interface that I still do not love. However, after extensive use, I've found all the core functionality remains intact. The Space Lens feature continues to be my go-to for storage management, while the uninstaller thoroughly removes those pesky leftover files from apps deleted long ago. Quick tip: Turn off the RAM notifications - they're more distracting than helpful.

Backblaze: Keep Backed Up

Speaking of essential tools, let's talk about Backblaze - because data loss isn't a matter of if, but when. For $8/month, Backblaze automatically backs up your Mac's internal drive and any connected external storage. What sets it apart isn't just the unlimited storage or the monthly backup reports, but their extensive documentation on backup strategies and best practices.

The Killer Combo - iPad Pro + Mac Studio

On the podcast I give a rundown of why I think the Mac Studio and iPad Pro combo is overlooked.

We hear a ton about Macbook Pro and Air as being a main computer. I prefer the desktop and iPad combo for now.

It fits my current workflow better than having a laptop that is always docked.

I can avoid the dongle life. Of course the downside is the downgrade in portability. BUT the iPad Pro has come a long way and is a true iPad replacement for me.
